Quit smoking is probably one of the most difficult addictions to give up. This is not surprising when many medical experts consider nicotine is more addictive than heroin or cocaine.
When people decide that they will stop smoking for good they can either go down two routes. The first and most drastic is the cold turkey route. The cold turkey approach is quite drastic because you cut out smoking immediately. The other approach is the gradually cessation. This basically means that you gradually wean yourself off the habit.
Many find that the cold turkey approach is more attractive and it certainly has it benefits with the main one being that you get over the process a lot quicker compared to the gradual approach. The cold turkey will not suit everyone and it requires a certain temperament and resolve to see it through. The side effects can be very intense and you will need to be strong mentally and physically and have a strong support group around you.
There are pros and cons attached to the cold turkey approach. In this article I will focus on the cons as follows:
1) The main con is the shock to the system. This is especially the case if you have a heavy long term smoking habit. To instantly cut of your source of nicotine can create extreme mental and physical reactions which can be too much for some people to cope with.
2) The extreme withdrawal symptoms can in some cases change people's personalities. From a person who is calm and friendly can turn into a nightmare to live with after going cold turkey.
3) Some people resort to another coping mechanism to deal with the withdrawal systems such as alcohol or drugs.
As you can see going turkey is not something that you should enter into lightly. However, many ex smokers have successfully done it and never looked back.
