If you want to get started in copywriting, there are a few things that you need to know in order to compete with the rest of the writers out there. Copywriting can be a very lucrative business. Either you can sell your own products and service, or you can write as a freelancer. Read on to find out some tips and tricks to improve your copywriting skills.
- Make sure that you are only selling to one person at one time, with your words. Use the word "you" a lot. Copywriting is salesmanship in print and you need to develop your sales letter as if it's just a conversation between two people.
- People buy from other people, and not big businesses. Write as the business owner. Use your name, not the company name. People don't want to buy from ACME Tires. They want to buy from Joe the mechanic. We seek personal relationships with people and that is what you want to provide.
- You have to spend almost 50% of your writing time perfecting the headline of your sales letter. If the customer is not compelled to read the headline, there is no point in finishing the rest of the copy, because you won't sell a thing.
- Show a picture of the product. Your customer will want to see what they are buying. It's very important to put the product in the hands of the user as much as possible. We are visual creatures, so no matter what you are selling, even if it's a service, you need to have a picture that relates to it.
- You need a rock-solid guarantee. Yes, almost everyone has a guarantee these days, but it's critical to use it as a marketing tool, especially when you are selling with direct marketing and won't have a chance to meet with the customer face-to-face.
- Write a ton of bullets and pick the best ones possible. Bullets are quick-read statements about your product, that give a benefit to the customer. No one will read you entire sales letter, but some people will buy your product entirely on the bullets.
With copywriting, the only thing that is going to make you really good is to write a lot (every day) and to test the big parts of your sales letters (like the headline). Learn as much as you can from the current copywriting greats, as well as looking at the direct mail pieces that come to your house. A combination of swiping from hot-selling sales letters and testing various parts of your pieces, is almost a sure-fire recipe for success.
