Putting Around The Golf Course

Expert Author Tricia Deed

As you well know golf is a mental game. Strategy is very important. Focusing is essential. Hitting the ball towards the designated target and dropping the ball into the target hole is critical for scoring. Putting around the golf course will improve your putting skills.

Have you ever played billiards or pool? Learning to hit the ball at correct angles to have the ball drop into the designated pocket is similar to putting in the game of golf.

As a beginner in billiards I had to learn:

  1. How to hold the stick
  2. How to hit the center of the que ball
  3. Where to hit the numbered ball to accomplish the correct hit
  4. Lining up the angle of the hit to the ball and the intended pocket
  5. How hard or soft to hit the ball to have it fall into the pocket

Learning billiards is like playing table golf. In my opinion playing billiards helps with learning the ease of hitting the ball correctly.

What is meant by this statement?

  1. How to hold or grip the golf club
  2. How to strike the with the putter head
  3. Locating the sweet spot on the putter
  4. Looking at the golf ball and the intended target for correct striking path
  5. How hard to hit the golf ball

Shoulder pain was one of my ailments when playing billiards; the second, painful wrists. The culprit was too much tension. If you are experiencing the same pain with your golf stroke it is because of a poor set up stance or posture and too much tension.

Billiards like putting begins with a mental visual. See the ball that you will be hitting, mentally draw the line from ball to target; see the end result of the ball ending in the designated target.

Did you miss the hole?

Review your putt:

  1. Did you have a comfortable set up stance?
  2. Did you feel solid with your weight placement?
  3. Could you feel how the ball was hit?
  4. Did the ball move at the necessary speed for the distance?
  5. Were you mentally prepared?
  6. Did you look at the intended hole?
  7. Did you hit the ball on the sweet spot of the putter?
  8. Were you free of tension?
  9. Did you roll the ball with ease?
  10. Did you let the putter head and face do the work?

Striking the ball in billiards is similar to putting the ball in golf. You do not have to hit the ball hard. Hitting the ball correctly with the stick or with the golf club with ease will accomplish the task. Hitting the ball with force for additional speed will give failing results in both of these games.

Make practice time for putting around the golf course. Putting is a "feeling". Each putt will have its own identity. Putting around the golf course with different hole locations will help to undo any practiced errors resulting from using the same hole.

Feeling the putt refers to your finger sensitivity when striking the ball. The feeling should be of no tension in the shoulder, arms, wrists, and no white knuckles. There should be a comfortable, secure, and easy feeling.

There is a lesson to be learned when working with any type of tools. Every carpenter, mechanic, gardener, and other craftsmen will tell you to let the tool do the work. Holding and guiding the tool is all the operator does.

Putting is no different. Hold the golf club correctly, swing with ease to roll the ball, and let the putter head and face do the work.
