What Is Perfect Pitch?

Simply put it is the ability to discern what any note is by hearing it, on it's own, without any reference note.

How Is Perfect Pitch Different Than Relative Pitch?

Relative pitch is the ability to discern what a note is with a reference point. For example if someone were to play a C on a piano and then they play a G and you can hear that it is a perfect 5th higher so you know that since the first note was a C, the second note is a G.

With perfect pitch you don't need that reference note. You could walk into a room completely "cold" (without hearing any other music) and someone could play a G on the piano, and you would know instantly that it is a G.

How Does Perfect Pitch Improve Your Musicianship?

First of all it's pretty much impossible to attain perfect pitch without also attaining relative pitch. With these two skills combined you will greatly improve your musicianship, your songwriting skills, and your singing. Some examples:

1. You will be able to "play by ear." You'll be able to play a song just by hearing it.

2. You will know what key a song is in just by listening to it for a few seconds.

3. Your ability to sing in tune will improve.

4. Your ability to play "solos" will greatly improve.

5. You will be able to easily compose melodies in your head.

6. You will be able to sing perfect harmonies.
