Puppy Obedience Training - Start With the Basics!

The objective of puppy obedience training is to provide your puppy with a cue of voice commands that he/she understands such as sit, down, stay and come. When training your puppy it is advisable to have treats ready to reward good behaviour and plenty of praise when he/she gets things right.

There are four main puppy obedience training commands these are as follows:

Sit -This simple command should be the first thing to train your puppy simply hold a treat in your left hand point at the floor and say in a clear voice sit, for the first few attempts a little encouragement may be needed simply use your free hand to push the puppies bum to the floor then praise and rewards with the treat immediately

Down - This command should be taught from the sitting position, also only after your puppy has mastered sit don't confuse your puppy only teach one command at a time, again with a treat in hand say in a clear voice down use a different hand gesture to sit so your puppy understand the difference, for the first few attempts use your free hand to pull your puppies paws forward so he/she is in the down position and treat and praise immediately

Stay - Again this command is thought for the sitting position simply tell your puppy to sit then in a clear voice tell your puppy to stay start by moving back one or two steps in the beginng, then gradually get further it is important to only reward your puppy if he/she stays in the position and does not move.

Come - This is usually taught after the stay commands simply tell your puppy to come in a positive voice and open your arms in a welcoming gesture again rewards your puppy straight away.

It is always best to start your puppy obedience training somewhere quite for example in the garden or home and as soon as your puppy starts to understand your commands go somewhere with a few more distractions.
