If you are looking at getting into print, then publishing short stories can be one cost effective way to get you some credit as an author with a track record.
While it's not so common to see the major companies publishing short stories in collections, though it can happen, but most frequently they tend to be compilations from elsewhere, rather than some unique work that has never been seen before. if they are new work, its 99% likely they will be from an experienced novelist or a celebrity.
However, there are some outlets for writers looking to get their miniature gems into print. You can search for specialist magazines and literary journals who publish short stories and submit to them. You could also consider getting your story published online, though this doesn't always carry the same credibility as appearing in a magazine.
I've discovered that there are pretty similar rules that apply for the submission of a short story as well as longer manuscripts. The chances of a magazine publishing short stories that you have written will increase with a concise covering letter, giving nice, punchy details of what the story is about and an indication of the target audience. You should also carefully check the genre and any length criteria. Don't think the brilliance of your writing justifies going over the word limit!
One other way you may be able to make a breakthrough is by entering writing competitions. Beware of those promising much, or telling you have won and then asking to send money. Make sure you check out past winners as scams have been uncovered.
If you can win one of these, or start to get someone publishing your short stories in even lightly read journals, then you have a chance of getting on to the next stage of the process and getting a collection ready for publication.
