Did you know that your public speaking topics is a tool to help you become a good speaker? Yes, you are absolutely right! This is one of the most important factors aside from the body of the message and the way you present it. The result of your speech, whether good or bad, depends on the quality of your topic.
Being a good speaker is not enough to make everyone listen to you attentively. Your topic must also be interesting to get their full attention and consider you to be an effective public speaker. No matter how excellent the delivery of the speech if it is not informative and no coherence at all then no one will attempt to focus on you. They would only criticize you for getting a non sense topic.
The question now is how you are going to choose the appropriate public speaking topic for your audience.
Initially, you need to be familiar of the people who will be listening to you. If you will be talking to your clients or customers, you should be able to market your merchandise. But be careful in speaking to them. Avoid being too obvious on exaggerating your promotion. As much as possible make it more informative and realistic.
When you identify your audience, you have to do it specifically. Get to know their age bracket, gender, interests and other related details. In this way, you can easily relate to them and narrow down your choices of public speaking topics. It would be a lot easier for you to arrive at the right subject matter. Just come to think of it, put yourself in the shoes of the listeners, what do you expect to hear from your speaker? By doing this, you can establish a good connection with them as you start talking.
Once you have categorized your audience, this is the time to choose your final topic. It should catch their attention or something that would interest them. Apart from that, it should be reliable. Never make a speech that is full of exaggeration. It only discourages the audience as soon as they find out that there is no single truth of all the things you have said. Conduct a research from several references and integrate them. You can use visuals or insert some humor to ease the boredom and maintain their attention to your speech.
In addition to that, you also have to identify your goal for speaking to them. Are you going to teach, persuade or inform them? This can help in creating the content of your message. It should have coherence in the whole idea of the subject matter. Your listeners might be confused about what you really want to convey to them.
Therefore, always remember to know your audience and objective before looking for possible public speaking topics. This is what effective communication is all about. Being able to express what you want to tell to the listeners.
