Depends on the cause of a depression, there are two kinds of treatment to address a depression. Those treatments are therapies by means of medication and by means of psychological treatment known as Psychotherapy. Some depressions need to be resolved by both treatments. In other cases only psychological treatments are needed and the medical treatment is not needed.
Psychotherapy is a treatment that helps depressed people by providing supportive counseling, cognitive therapy, and problem solving therapy that might include behavioral therapy or interpersonal therapy. Each therapy has its own purposes. This is a long-term depression treatment method.
As the depressed person going through supportive counseling, it is expected that the pain of the depression and the feeling of hopelessness will be reduced and ultimately be eliminated. As the depressed person's feelings are getting better, it will support the administration of the other therapies to achieve a more effective result.
Cognitive therapy is administered in order to help a depressed person to identify which of her life problems that are so critical and need to be prioritized, and which are not, so that she can address them appropriately. This kind of therapy will also help her to be more positive in identifying her life goals and assessing herself.
Personal therapy is a therapy administered to help the depressed person addresses the problem that significantly caused the depression. The therapy might consist of behavioral therapy for helping the person in depression to have a better skill in dealing with problems, or interpersonal therapy to resolve any problems in personal relationships and improve the person's social skill in interpersonal relationship.
Again, depends on how bad the depression is, the amount of problems that caused the depression, the intensity of the therapy, and the speed of the progress, the time it takes for the psychotherapy to be fully accomplished will vary from case to case. Some people started to feel the effects of the therapy in 6 sessions while others started to feel a significant improvement within 20 sessions to 30 sessions of therapy. Generally, a milder depression could be addressed in less sessions/time than the more severe depression that sometimes requires an extended treatment.
Normally, the therapy sessions are scheduled once in a week regularly, but the intensity could be increased within the beginning phase of the therapy, or in response to the severity of the depression and the significance of life crises that the depressed person went through.
