Protecting Your Loved Ones While Moving

Expert Author Scott Brunson

Moving. The one word is enough to send chills down a person's spine. The cost. The hassle. The potential damage to expensive furniture.

Hiring movers helps ease the burden on a homeowner's back (and on his friendships). However, the first thing that crosses a person's mind when hiring someone else to move his worldly possessions is whether they'll be as careful as he would be when moving his furniture. Strangely enough, probably the last thing on his mind is purchasing additional padding to protect his furniture from the rigors of moving. After all, the movers have moving pads and plastic covers, right?

Homeowners can invest in a peace of mind that doesn't usually come to.... mind. Purchasing furniture covers will ensure that each piece will be individually protected, and they can be reused again and again.

Furniture covers are usually made of plastic (polyethylene) or quilted blankets. While the plastic option is more cost-efficient, the only protection it provides is from soiling and some scratching. It also tends to be of the flat sheet variety, which means taping and maneuvering the plastic around the furniture. I imagine the tape does hamper the ability to reuse the covers.

On the other hand, quilted furniture covers can be made to fit your furniture's exact shape. Many dimensions, shapes and sizes may be found online or at a local moving company. Prices start at around $20 and only go up to about $70, which could be a deal compared to repairing damage (or buying a whole new sofa!).  While plastic covers start at only $3 each, well, I've already covered the downfalls of that plan.

Don't forget that there are other obstacles of peril when moving your beloved possessions. Covers are available for hand trucks and door jams. Complete the set with covers for washer and dryer sets, a variety of sizes for big screen televisions, mattresses, refrigerators, dining chairs, and kitchen ranges.

An important thing to note when choosing which covers to purchase is whether they have sturdy binding or edging to prevent the seams of the furniture covers from tearing apart when in use. Check the manufacturer's safety measures to make sure you won't run into any surprises when you move. After all, insurance for your loved ones may come in a variety of formats, including furniture covers.
