Promoting a band effectively is really the only way that you will have success in the music industry. After you have made a killer demo or E/P it is vital to your music career that you get your music out there. If you don't promote a band effectively you will never be able to develop a fan base, which leads to better gigs and in turn can lead to a record deal. Let's face it, if you don't establish yourself as a reputable band record labels won't even think about signing you.
My friend Riz came up with a brilliant idea when he was at the beginning stages of promoting a band he was serious with. The idea was so great and put together so well that it landed him a major label deal which resulted in him being able to "live the dream" even to this day.
What did he do? He made a video, and not a music video. He made a video that highlighted his persona and stage character. In the video he was a very artistic, eclectic, and interesting guy. A guy that had charisma, intelligence, and was a pure artist. He sold the record label on this character, whether it was really him or not doesn't matter. The character in that film was a rock star, and the label knew he could sell records.
This video was put together with his press kit. We all know that every serious musician needs a press kit when promoting a band. Making this video and putting it in with his press kit made it stand out. It was different than all of the other press kits that a record label receives day in and day out.
When promoting a band you need to think outside of the box and do creative things that will get you noticed. Try putting together a video showcasing your artist and musician side. Be different and interesting, qualities like that sell records and we all know how important that is.
