Project Management Tips to Help Make Your Next Freeelance Project Run Smoothly

Projects don't manage themselves, even if this seems to be the common view. Organization in the beginning of any project will always set the tone and pace. What makes everything seem so effortless sometimes is the skill set and organization that actually governs the project. Like a good meal, it is the right combination of ingredients coming together that will spell the success for both the client and the team.

More than ever before, small businesses and freelancers are practicing project management tips with all of their projects as vital elements of the business model. This is the standard. Why leave everything up to chance when you have project management tools at your disposal?

There are many project management and collaboration tools available. Basecamp is one that use on a daily basis to track and manage all our projects. We've been using it for a couple of years now and I can honestly say, I don't know how we managed to get anything done withouti it.

In order to ensure that a project is going to be a success is to create a strong foundation. If this foundation is going to be breaking new ground, then it's important to round up the resources you will need to begin building that foundation. If the project is nothing new to you, something that you are more than familiar with and feel at ease about, it's still prudent to go over everything so there are no surprises popping up later.

Questions to ask yourself: Will you have the resources and time to manage the project effectively? - Will you need to contact outside sources for assistance? - What expertise will the client possibly need that might be overlooked? What contracts will I need to have in place?

These may all seem like simple questions to ask yourself, but if you simply assume everything will just magically workout, think again.

Putting your action plan together will take a lot of the stress off you and the client too. Stress is contagious. If you are not sure where things might be headed and are not prepared, your client will pick up on some of this. It's much better to anticipate the unexpected than to wait for it to pop up on its own accord.

Many small business owners rely on outsourcing areas of expertise. Depending on the project, managing it may have you communicating with people who are specialists in their own fields. When contracting outside help, never assume that everyone is on the same page. Qualify and ask a lot of questions to ensure that everyone knows what part they are playing in the project and everyone knows what role they are going to play.

Communication within projects is extremely vital. When communicating with the client, it's very important to cover the client's expectations and talk candidly about any concerns that you or the client might have about the project being discussed. Take lots of notes and cover everything in as great as detail as you can.

Feedback to everyone involved in the project is also going to play a large role. If you have any concerns about key points or touchy areas of a particular project, these are the points that need to be smoothed over, before things get underway. Communication is going to be your most valuable tool, so use it to your best advantage. It will be your job to clear up any confusion before the project actually begins.

Make a schedule that includes the time, the elements of the project and make sure that you allow enough extra time for those unforeseen problems that could crop up. Once everything possible has been done to ensure things run smoothly, it will appear to be effortless once the project begins.
