Project Charter Template - Getting Off to a Good Start

Expert Author Apisit Vejjajiva

In order to get a project off the ground and secure both the financial support and in certain cases the physical support you are going to need to see it through to completion you are going to need a document that lists exactly what you have in mind and how you plan to accomplish it. It is usually the responsibility of the project manager to produce this very important document and to make sure that it follows an acceptable format he will refer to a project charter template rather than simply creating his own document.

By using a well thought out template the preparer can avoid the possibility of making costly mistakes. At the same the charter will lay out in very specific terms what the roles responsibilities of every member of the team will be, this will reduce or eliminate any risk of confusion and misinterpretation that can cause the project to encounter serious problems of possibly fail altogether. Most companies have a standard form that they use for every project no matter how small or large it is to avoid any problems or confusion on behalf of either party.

If your organization does not have a previous project charter to refer to you will find that there are many websites online that can provide you with a template that will help you to create the one you need. Since not all projects are the same and all companies do not work within the same parameters you might find it beneficial to download several different templates so that you can choose the one that will be most applicable to your specific needs. Even with the need for different templates you will find that they all must contain certain basic information that does not change from project to project.

Any project charter template that you look at must have space for the name and address of your company along with the contact person, which is usually the person who is creating the document. This information should be followed by a description of the project including what is to be done, when it should be done by and who will be involved in seeing it through to completion. It should also outline the rights and responsibilities of any party that will be involved in the project. There must be an area that covers risk management to reassure investors that you are ready for any foreseeable problems that may occur during the project. The last section is a block for all parties involved to sign approval of the charter.
