Spending Time With The Kids
PRO:
First of all you don't have to depend on childcare or somebody else taking care of them and the savings alone can be significant. Or worry if they are being treated right. We all know of horror stories with nannies, etc. This is a way to watch them grow up and also to get closer to them. There is nothing more important in our lives than our families, but it usually takes us our whole lives to figure that out.
CON:
Children can be very distracting especially when you are trying concentrate on a certain subject. Or a baby crying who needs to be fed or changed. If your wife/husband is home with you he/she can take care of those things. You may need to hire somebody to help you at home, but at least you can watch them.
Not Having To Dress Up
PRO:
You can literally go from bedroom to office in seconds. Also, in your pajama's, but be careful if you are on live conference call. Remember where you are. It could be embarrassing. You don't have to shower immediately and when you do get dressed it can be very casual. Most people work better in a casual atmosphere and it relieves stress.
CON:
You may like dressing up to go to work. Some people work better in a controlled atmosphere. Being dressed casually may effect how you treat your work. Being laid back may not agree with your work ethic.
Time Management
PRO:
You may be able to focus better at home without so many interruptions from other people at work. People stopping by and wanting to chat about last night's game or something that happened to them can be very distracting and keep you from being focused. You may have an idea and lose it when a fellow employee interrupts you.
CON:
When you are at home you may think of some of the things you have to get done and substitute that for your work load. this can be disastrous. You have to be very disciplined with your time and what your there to do. Myself I like to cook and am constantly thinking of recipes. Throwing in a load of wash is not bad, but I think you get the idea.
Flexible Hours
PRO:
It's great to be able to set your own schedule to fit in with your home. Doctor's appointments, shopping, picking up kids, etc. Be careful this can get away from you and defeat the purpose of working from home. Remember this is the way you earn a living and has to be first consideration in order for all the other things to work.
CON:
Workaholics sometimes spend too much time in the "home office" and actually take away time from the family. Getting up in the middle of dinner for instance to take care of something he just thought about. Set a distinct time for when your day is over.
These are a few of the reasons to help you decide if working from home is for you. I'll bet their are plenty more you can think of.
Committed to your success,
