Private Equity Class - How Much Should I Spend on One?

Expert Author Theo O'Brien

,For most of us, cost is a huge concern when selecting a training program or course.  If you are considering a private equity class, as yourself, "how much should I pay?"  Now a college-level course on private equity might be what you are looking for.  And if so, pursue it.

But be aware that relatively few colleges and universities offer programs specifically on private equity.  Assuming you've already graduated from college or are in the process of pursuing your undergraduate degree, you would likely be looking for a graduate course on PE.  If it's an MBA you're looking for, one estimate puts the average cost of an MBA degree at $40,000.  And the average cost of graduate school in general has increased by about 35% in the last ten years.  My point is not to reject grad school or an MBA but to say that there are other less expensive ways to take a course on PE and prepare yourself to work in the industry.  Many PE professionals obtain an MBA or graduate degree during their financial career, even after they've started working at a PE firm, to better position themselves for advancement.

One such alternative is an online private equity training program.  This can be a great way to learn more about PE without having to pay the crushing cost of graduate school.  Additionally, these programs may be better for you because they are directed specifically toward you and your goal of learning more about PE and becoming a part of the industry.  Through various resources (rarely offered at grad schools) like videos, articles, required reading, career coaching, etc. you can learn more than you may have in several college courses.  Of course this is not always the case, so you should carefully evaluate any PE course before signing up.

I said I would help you figure out how much you want to pay.  If you are currently pursuing a degree, try to take a class that will still go toward your degree because you would be paying that tuition anyway.  Otherwise you may be paying extra and often more than $1,000 for a course that doesn't help you graduate.  As for online PE training programs, it depends on the program and what it offers.  Look to see if you are getting any value besides the certificate or just the course.  Beyond that, I would not pay more than $700-800 for any course and for that money it would need to be an extensive program not just a quick class.  But this all depends on your financial situation.

But... many private equity professionals could complete more training and compete better within this competitive industry.

Our team has put together a 100% online private equity training and certification program that provides you with career tools, resume feedback, career coaching, and video training modules. This program is called the Private Equity Certified Professional (CPEP) Designation Program.
