Private Equity Certification

Expert Author Theo O'Brien

Private equity (PE) is a complex field and applicants to a buyout firm often have almost exactly the same qualifications. One way to distinguish yourself is by obtaining a certificate of completion in a private equity training program.

A PE certification program is a great way to show a potential employer that you are serious about working in the industry and have taken steps to meet that goal. You should look for a certification program that is both rigorous and gives you resources to enter the industry such as career training, background knowledge of the industry and different tools that help you learn more about PE.

A PE certification typically requires that you complete required reading and explore the resources offered by the program. This may entail: books specifically written on PE and the buyout industry; reports; videos; audio interviews; articles and other written materials. It may take you 3-6 months to complete the online program but many let you complete the program according to your own schedule. (A convenient aspect for those of us who are busy with work or school and do not have the time to put in the necessary time studying in just a few weeks). Once you feel you are ready, you can then schedule a testing date.

Then, you will be tested on how much you have learned about the industry and whether you are prepared to contribute to a PE firm or at least knowledgeable enough to communicate with others about the industry. In at least one program, you are required to get at least 70% on the exam (for some of the more rigorous programs you must receive a score of at least 80% correct including essays and multiple choice questions).

This is a challenge but once you ace the exam (as you will almost certainly do if you complete all the training and read the materials closely) you will get to show off your certificate in interviews and on your resume. This is a simple way to improve your qualifications and make up for a lack of knowledge specifically in PE.
