There is a saying that we start to age as soon as we are born, but does it mean we can't do anything about preventing aging skin? The skin is the largest organ in the body, and, like the rest of the body, it needs to be cared for to look its best. If we look after our general health and well-being, we can keep the outward signs of aging from appearing too soon. It is never too early to start.
People from cooler areas of the world often have beautiful skin right into old age, because they are not exposed to the skin's most damaging enemy. That enemy is sun; regular exposure to sunlight, without protection, causes premature skin aging. An even suntan is a recipe for wrinkles, lines and sagging skin. Enjoy being outdoors, but cover up with a shirt, hat and a 30+ sunscreen all the time. Replace lost moisture by regularly using a quality moisturizer, and stay indoors during the hottest part of the day.
A healthy, nutritious diet is necessary to keep your skin hydrated and youthful. Limit fried and fast foods, sugary drinks and foods, alcohol and caffeine. These foods are often "empty" calories anyway - they give nothing of value to your body, and can lead to obesity, diabetes and skin problems. Eat lots of fresh vegetables and fruit, raw as much as possible, and drink plenty of plain water - these are all aging skin prevention. Exercise is also great for your skin and makes you feel fantastic. Some light exercise, like walking, on 4 or 5 days of the week, is all you need.
The body needs adequate sleep, rest and relaxation. Sleep is when the body revitalizes and rebuilds, so you need to get 6 to 8 hours of restful sleep, on a regular basis. The body also needs relaxation and rest, as well as sleep. Take time out for yourself once a week; have a massage or a pedicure, learn meditation, drive to the country, walk in the park - anything which is a special treat to you. Stress is very bad for your skin; it's also bad for your whole body.
If you wear make-up, always remove it before going to sleep. It can clog the pores and drag on the skin, causing lines to start and preventing your skin rejuvenating as you sleep. Use a good natural cleanser, not soap, on your face and follow it up with a natural based moisturizer. Your skin doesn't need extra oil; it needs extra moisture. If for whatever reason you feel you are short in some areas you can always supplement your efforts by taking natural based vitamin supplements and skin creams.
Follow these tips to ensure that what you do throughout your life is preventing aging skin.
