Preschool Or Daycare?

Preschool or Daycare? The main differences are the targeted ages, hours of operation, and focus. Preschool targets ages 2 1/2 to 5 years as daycare is generally for ages ranging from infancy to late elementary ages. Preschool is usually from 8:00AM to 2:00PM. Daycare has longer hours of operation. In preschool the focus is on learning. Daycare is focused on keeping the child entertained, fed and rested. BOTH should offer stimulating activities to enhance cognitive, social, and physical development.

A word about Preschool.
Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten are the same thing. Many times there will be different preschool age classes like PS2 and PS3 or PK2 and PK3. Programs are often organized around a specific educational theory or approach, such as Montessori or Waldorf. I have found the smaller private schools, usually with a Christian foundation, are the highest quality. Classes are generally smaller and the curriculum is generally very age appropriate and educational, and the teachers well trained. If your child is between 2 1/2 and 5 yrs, your best bet is too look for a facility that offers both preschool and daycare as well as Kindergarten. So the transition from Preschool to Kindergarten is much easier. My children attended a small Christian school, went to daycare from 7:30am to 8:00am then preschool from 8:00am to 2:00pm then daycare from 2:00pm to 5:00pm. Usually the tuition is only slightly higher than you would pay for full time daycare. But if you can afford it that little extra is really worth it when it comes to the best for your child!

A word about Daycare
Daycare, also known as Child Care Center, Child Enrichment Center, Child Learning Center. Do not be fooled by the words 'learning' or 'enrichment.' Be very wary when choosing a daycare center. ESPECIALLY if it is a large corporate chain. These facilities pay terribly and are basically just child warehouses, the corporate policy emphasizes profit maximization with little to no concern for the child's physical welfare and no concern whatsoever for their emotional wellbeing.

I'm sure there are some quality daycare centers out there, but my vote is definitely for Preschool. Generally the overall quality of learning structure and caregivers are better!
