Pregnancy - Boy Or Girl - Finding Out Your Baby's Gender

Pregnancy may be the most wonderful thing that can ever happen to a woman, the feeling is beyond words especially when you see your baby for the very first time. We would often hear mothers say on their pregnancy-boy or girl it doesn't matter as long as it's healthy. At around 18-20 weeks, the sex of the baby can already be determined. There are 3 ways on how to confirm the baby's gender.

1.) Ultrasound- Although this can be performed at any stage of your pregnancy, if your purpose is to determine your child's gender, it's best to do it between 18 and 26 weeks. Some health care providers will not perform an ultrasound because the American College of OB/GYNS has issues a statement against the effects of routine ultrasound exposure during pregnancy. Most physicians though do not pay attention to this warning despite the fact that there are no sufficient studies proving the safety of ultrasound procedures. One thing is for sure, ultrasound can change the way the cell reproduces and moves. This method is the most common way of finding out the baby's gender but surprisingly, it's the least accurate. Accuracy would depend on the baby's cooperation, gestational age and the technician's ability.

2.) CVS (Chorionic Villus Sampling)- this is typically performed between 8 and 11 weeks gestation to look at the baby's chromosomes. Some health care providers opt to do this procedure as late as 13 weeks. This is recommended for people who possess high risk genetic abnormalities. The results will be available within 7 to 14 days.

3.) Genetic Testing- this is also used to determine your pregnancy-boy or girl before birth. But since this carries a risk to the baby and the pregnancy, it is rarely used to determine the baby's gender.
