Potty Training a Golden Retriever Puppy Is a Serious Business

Taking care of pets come big responsibilities. It includes feeding, training and grooming. And this is true for all types of animals. But for the most common pet that is considered as man's best friend, training is a big responsibility. This is the reason why it is recommended that certain age is only encouraged to take care of dogs. A popular breed of dog that a lot of American families keep as a pet is Golden Retrievers. Potty training a golden retriever puppy is truly one of the very first training programs that any pet owner should consider; otherwise, they will probably end hating their pet.

As soon as you bring home your puppy, you should immediately bring him to the designated spot where you want him to become potty trained. Why is this so? There are two main reasons for doing this. First is you want to introduce him right away to this spot, he will probably smell it and get himself familiar with it. Second is, the trip from where he came from might be long enough to make him want to urinate. Remember that puppies under 6 months old cannot control their bladder for more than six hours.

This is also the reason why you need to establish a regular routine for potty training a puppy. As much as possible, if you belong in a large family with children who agreed to take care of your new pet, include them in the schedule. This way the children are not only trained to be responsible for potty training the new puppy, but they also get to bond with their new friend. Golden retrievers are well known to have a happy and friendly personality. So, it is best that every member of the household gets a chance to take him to a walk and play with him regularly.

I remember my friend who adopted a golden retriever. She has 3 boys: the eldest is 17, the second is 15 and the youngest is 13. She really made it a decree that all three boys will take turns in potty training their puppy. She gathered all three and they all drew up a schedule that everyone will adhere to. And then, they posted it somewhere everyone can check it out so there are no excuses for missing on their schedule.

Another important reminder about potty training a puppy is in case he accidentally urinates or make a mess inside the house is never spank or hurt your dog. Please be reminded that they do not have full control of the situation. Hurting them might only lead your dog to developing unpleasant behaviors.

Just remember all these tips in potty training a puppy and you will be assured of a happier and more secure pet. After all, potty training is one of the most essential trainings he can get.
