Our thoughts aren't us, yet most of us until we learn otherwise believe they are and behave according to random negative thoughts. It can be a painful, difficult process to realise that your stream of thinking is not who you are, it's also something you know already so it can appear to come as no surprise when you fully realise it.
Your thoughts are important because they lead you to have certain attitudes and act out behaviours based on how you think your world is.
The technique below will help you tune into your thinking process and its thoughts clearly and easily. It works by cutting out the exterior noise which allows you to put your focus and awareness on the internal noise and voices in your mind.
Here's what to do:
- Firstly take a pair of soft malleable ear plugs and a note book and pen.
- Find yourself in a place that is quiet, where you can relax, and know you won't be disturbed.
- When you're comfortable with your surroundings, follow the instructions for inserting the ear plugs.
- Now just sit and listen to the internal noise. Write down what you notice, everything is information and potentially useful, so write it down.
- Here are some questions that can help. What do you notice about the sound of your breathing? What can you hear from your body?
- What do you notice about your thoughts...are they louder or softer in your head now? Write what you notice about your most dominant thoughts, are they positive or negative?
- Focus in on first a positive thought and then a negative thought and write down what you notice when you do this.
- Move location in your home or outside. Make yourself a drink and get comfortable. Now take a look at your thoughts written down in concrete form in your notebook. Highlight for yourself the thoughts that you believe are untrue.
- Do the thoughts you think are true, serve you anymore? It could be that a thought you've been thinking for ages, doesn't bring you what you want anymore. Write down the opposite of your negative thoughts.
Up to now you've made choices unconsciously in terms of what to believe which has led to certain attitudes and behaviours. Realise that you have free will to choose your thoughts.
Changing the negative thoughts to powerful thoughts that will bring you what you want in life is how you change and literally transform your experience.
Once you get used to using this technique, you'll find it easier and easier to use and also your awareness of your thoughts will grow and your attachment to their meaning in time will change. As you do this you are working towards managing your mind in such a way that you are choosing your thoughts.
Whenever you feel unbalanced or lost in your life, or if you are determined to focus on more positive aspects of your life, use this technique to get clear on where you are.
