Positive Discipline Strategies For a Five Year Old (Part 2)

Through positive discipline techniques your child will be able to successfully transition from toddler to adolescent. The aim of this article is to teach parents strategies to implement positive discipline techniques for a five year old.

One of the best things you can do is to help you five year old step up to the place and accept more responsibilities. Even though your child is 5, he or she will be able to help with things around the house. For an example, your 5 year old is capable of picking up his/her own toys, helping with preparing the table for dinner, throwing his/her own laundry into a hamper, etc. Giving your child small, age-appropriate tasks will teach your child responsibility and these are very important values to instill in your 5 year old.

Whenever you are praising your child, make sure that you are specific. Most times parents are throwing out a random "Good Job" that this kind of feedback becomes meaningless. Rather than compliment the character of the child, make sure that you praise the specific words, comments, actions that you want the child to continue.

Make sure that your 5 year old get a chance to play in groups. Although supervision is vital to successful play dates, gathering with other children your child's age is very important. This is because playing with other children helps your child learn about the importance of rules, sharing, cooperating, and getting along with others.

In conclusion, although he or she may fight and resort to bickering a lot, your 5 year old can handle a variety of problems with these tips listed above. And as always, make sure that you set a good example for you child and model the expected behaviors.

Do you want to learn exactly how to eliminate your child's out-of-control and defiant behavior without using Punishments, Time-Outs, Behavioral Plans, or Rewards?
