Parents are always wondering how they can reach and motivate their 5 year old. The purpose of this article is to teach parents different strategies to provide positive discipline techniques for children in this age rage.
The first strategy is to stop telling their children to "use their words". This sounds like a positive thing to say, except for the fact it is meaningless to your 5 year old. You are not telling your child what to do, or how to do. Instead of using this phrase make sure that you give your child the words he or she is attempting to communicate.
Another positive way to implement discipline for children this age is to start off by asking how your child is experiencing things. In other words, ask you child "Are you proud of yourself for getting a 90 on the spelling test", "What was the coolest thing you learned in math class today", or "What was the most challenging thing for you today during school?" Questions like these will help facilitate your child's ability to share his or her feelings with you.
Last but not least it is extremely important to reflect back to the child what you hear him or her saying to you. For example say to your child "It seems like you are angry when I did not answer your question right away". "You look sad that is time to clean up after the fun time you were having playing that game", or "You look very excited to go outside and play!" Reflecting back what you see the child expressing will help your five year old share with you.
In conclusion, children of this age are constantly looking to you as the parent to follow your lead. Always to be sure to mean what you say and say what you mean.
