Art and architecture collide in Portugal. Because this country was a cradle for the many influences of different civilizations, the Portuguese culture is considered as rich and colorful. The art of making Portuguese tiles has been a product of years of combining the country's own style with the influences of foreign colonizers. It can be seen that their position under the different conquerors has indeed caused them a piece of their culture which has helped them garner international prestige.

Tiles are materials which have affected architecture for years. Apart from using these indoors, the Portuguese employ these for structures such as churches, buildings and sidewalks. Often referred to as 'azulejos,' these pieces of art are found around the country. Nonetheless, one will wonder what sets these apart from others. These ceramic beauties are distinct for they appear in blue and white designs. These emerged in the whole European region and have become objects of elegance and sophistication.

In addition, there is another characteristic which these tiles have. As taken from the Italian tradition, these tiles from Portugal are actually hand painted. Because of this, the people of the country were able to include their own style and talent with these. Nowadays, these are considered a huge part of the Portuguese culture, as well as architecture and social life. Today, there are numerous kinds of tiles found in the country such as Alicatado tile, Aresta tile, Corda seca tile and Majolica tile.

Even with the fact that tiles have not seen their origin in this European country, the Portuguese have incorporated the art of tile making to their own culture and traditions. Because of this, they have obtain recognition around the world. In a way, seeing the Portugal tile can help a person see years of cultural and architectural development.
