Pond Algae Treatment

All garden pond owners have the algae dilemma one way or another. Luckily, there are several pond algae treatments you can do in order to get rid of those pond parasites.

As much as you want to totally eliminate all the algae in your pond, you simply can't. A tolerable amount of algae in the pond is needed to maintain the balance since it is an ecosystem. That is why most of the pond algae treating agents that are available in the market do not actually kill all the algae in the water feature one has. Chemical-based algaecides will indeed kill 99.9% of the algae in the water. However, it is too risky to use especially if you have a fish pond to take care of.

First and foremost, you need to understand how algae thrive and reproduce in your water pond. Aside from the water itself, algae flourish the most in the area of the pond where there is much sunlight. That's why you may notice that the algae usually start in one particular location in the pond. Another thing that algae surely love is the wastes produce that stay in the water. These wastes release nutrients that make algae more active.

Aside from the use of pond treatment supplies that are readily available, there are also some alternative things you can do to prevent algae from flourishing in the pond. One is to avoid over feeding the marine creatures in the pond particularly the fish. Since algae survive and multiply through eating the organic wastes produced by the overfed fish, it can lead to algal bloom which is more problematic. Hence the more the fish eat the more wastes they will produce. And the more wastes available for algae to consume, the faster they can reproduce in your pond.

It is but a given task to regularly change the water in the pond. Not only it hygienic for the whole garden but also a good way to prevent algae from flourishing. This activity can be done for at least once every year. The wastes and other things that sustain algae growth can at least be lessened annually.
As mentioned above, algae multiply the most in the area of the pond where there is much sunlight. One way of controlling algae growth is to minimize the light exposure of the pond. If you are still in the process of planning, then you'd better put it in a location where there is much shade. This will prevent you from thinking too much about the algae in the pond.

But if in case you have toiled on doing all of these alternatives, then you can go for algaecides. Just be extra careful with the amount of chemicals you are going to put in the pond. Keep in mind that it is not only the pond which is at the risk of dying, but the fish and other living creatures in it as well. However, the use of chemical based algaecides will always be the last in your list of options.
