A lot of the research surrounding Polymialgia implicates two causative factors: our genetics and environmental factors. When we look at treatment solutions or options it is important to understand this fact. Although it may like the obvious, we have no control over our genetic factors, so treatment options leave us focusing on the environmental aspect of treatment. The good news is we have nearly 100% control of our environmental factors.
When the researchers refer to environmental factors, they are not referring to global warming or greenhouse gases. They are referring to the immediate external environment we surround ourselves with or interact with on a day to day basis. A lot of research, not just in the area of polymialgia but areas of neurology and health and well-being are pointing to these environmental factors being vital for our health. If we can't control our genetics, then the biggest influence we can have on our bodies, minds and health come in the form of our environment.
Many people who have developed chronic pain disorders like polymialgia or fibromyalgia will recount a traumatic event or stressful period leading up to the onset of symptoms. This is a classic example of the influence of environmental factors on the development or triggering of a disease. Stressful external events mould your external environment. At times we may not have an influence on those external events or how they unfold, but what we do have total control over is how we react, deal or respond to those events. And this is what we should focus on.
Decreasing your stress levels, calming the mind and body can go a long way to helping settle down your polymialgia. Here are a few recommendations to get you started.
Start what I call a media fast. Think of the media inputs that you expose yourself to and go on a media diet of sorts. If you really stop and think about what is shown and reported on the media and news everyday, it is very toxic. Quite often it's sensationalized, over dramatic journalism with a heavy angle of fear injected into it. Think about this, if you read 30 minutes of negative information everyday and watched 30 minutes of negative information every night, could this in any way have a positive benefit on your health? Absolutely not. Get in control of your external environment and chose to only let your mind and thoughts be exposed to positive and up lifting news and information as you go through this healing process. Many people fear that they will get out of touch with the world or they won't know what's going on in the world if they don't watch the news. Don't worry the world will be fine without you knowing and worrying about every detail and I am sure if something really important did happen a friend or neighbor would tell you about it.
Begin some gently exercise. Exercise is great for stress and also vitally important to keep up with during your polymialgia. What is the best exercise? Walking! Which is lucky because any other form of exercise will probably be too difficult at this stage of your recovery. No excuses for not walking, weather permitting that is - it doesn't require any fancy equipment, costs nothing and can be done during most daylight hours. Start off with whatever you can do and gently increase it aiming for 30-40 minutes a day.
Start some practice of meditation. The ability to calm the mind is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves. The mind is constantly busy, it is constantly chattering away, thinking about a million different things. Meditation allows the mind to rest, calm and recenter itself. Developing a calm mind during periods when the body is in a disease crisis is often very important because during this period it is normal that our anxiety is raised because of the pain we are feeling in our body. Meditation will seem hard at first, everything that is worth learning is hard at first. It is something very different and will take practice. For beginners I recommend a good guided audio CD.
Start taking control of your external environment and get your health back on track.
