What are polymer clay transfers and what are they used for? As you may already know polymer clay is the hottest thing to hit the market. If you enjoy making your own jewelry you will love working with this material. Polymer clay transfers are a way to design and make your jewelry more unique and beautiful. It allows you to make them more personal by placing a photo image or other special design onto the jewelry.

Polymer clay transfers use a process that moves the image from paper and transfers it to the clay. The color pigments are taken from the original image and placed onto the clay or the top layer of the paper is transferred. Either way you end up with a beautiful decorative image.

There are several different methods used to transfer designs onto the clay for decorative purposes. Below are some of the most common methods used for polymer clay transfers:

  • Toner Image Transfer
  • Photo Image Transfer
  • Water Slide Decals
  • T-shirt Transfer Papers
  • Liquid Polymer Clay Transfer

The most popular method seems to be the toner image transfers. They are the easiest to do and don't require materials that are hard to find.

It is even possible for you to print out photos and other images from your computer to be used as polymer clay transfers. It is important that you use the right kind of paper to get the best results or you may find your image too light to use or it may not transfer at all.

Once you have successfully transferred the image onto the polymer clay and the firing process has been completed the image will not fade or wear off. You have a piece of jewelry with your favorite image or photo as a permanent design. Polymer clay transfers are not only used for jewelry. They can be used to decorate other designs that you create as well such as your sculptures and plaques. Have fun experimenting!
