Playing Guitar With Small Hands - Don't Let the Beginner Problems Keep You From Playing

If you want to play guitar, small hands and shorter or thicker fingers may seem like a problem. Of course having wide hands with longer slender fingers can be an advantage, but don't let your present size of your hands and fingers keep you from becoming a guitar player.

One common beginner complaint is that their hands and fingers just don't seem to be able to bend and move properly. Those with smaller hands blame this on their hands and sometimes give up thinking that guitar is impossible for them. Many will even avoid the instrument thinking that having small hands will keep them from ever playing well at all.

The reality is that any size of hand or fingers has considerable frustration at first because the fingers just don't seem to have the dexterity and flexibility needed. Keep at it and eventually these skills will improve and it will become quite a bit easier. Regardless of your hand size, at first you will feel uncomfortable as a beginner.

Due to the nature of the guitar at first, having smaller hands or stubby fingers isn't that bad of a problem. If you can't quite reach a note that's 5 frets away, you can just play the same note a string up. You always will have easy access to any note.

If you want a guitar that suits your hands better, consider getting one with a more narrow fretboard so that the strings are a bit closer together. If you have stubby or thick fingers, find a guitar with a fretboard where the strings are a bit more spaced out or use light gauge strings. This strategy should be able to take care of most problems.

Regardless what your hands or fingers are like, you can play the guitar. Don't let something like this hold you back.
