Planning Tips for Your 5K Race

Expert Author Judy Mick

You've been training for your 5K race and finally the big day is here! You're excited - and you should be! After many years of running, I still get excited on race day!

There are some things, however, that you want to remember.

Make sure you have pre-registered for your race. Waiting until the day of means higher fees, long lines and just unnecessary stress.

Don't eat too late the night before the race - or too close to the start. My rule of thumb is to eat a Power Bar about an hour before race time.

Keep a good sleeping pattern the few days before the race. The night before, you'll probably have pre-race jitters and may not sleep well - plus you'll be up early on race day. If you've slept well a few nights before, you'll be fine.

Make sure you have everything ready for your race before you go to bed. I always have my bib pinned onto my shirt, if it's a race using a timing chip - make sure it's fastened on your shoe. Have your running watch ready, cap, shorts - everything ready to just jump into race morning. Also, have your after race bag packed with dry clothes, shoes and socks.

Also be sure to have your race day logistics locked down before you go to bed. Verify race time, if you have to be bussed to the start - make sure of when and where the buses will be. Keep race morning as stress free as possible.
