Planning Capital Hen Weekends in Edinburgh - Great Fun For Girls

Expert Author Robert Yates

To talk about hen "nights" is perhaps understating the case, however, because these days hen weekends are equally popular. And as the name suggests, hen weekends aren't just about the nightlife - important as that is! Modern-day hens and their fun-loving friends have raised their expectations considerably, so they're looking for fun, excitement and adventure - both night and day - from Friday through to Sunday.

Of course, the benefits of extending a bride's pre-nuptial celebrations are numerous. Holding an entire weekend of festivities allows plenty of time for shopping, a theatre outing or concert, some more shopping, then perhaps a sortie out of town to get behind the wheel of a go-kart or - not for the feint-hearted! - to tackle a climbing wall. When it comes to evening entertainment, smart restaurants, stylish pubs and sassy nightclubs abound.

So what sort of things can you realistically plan to do on hen weekends in Edinburgh? Well, on the Friday night, why not get things off to a show-stopping start by booking tickets to see a play or a musical? Being home to the Usher Hall, the Traverse Theatre, the Bedlam Theatre, the Edinburgh Playhouse and the King's Theatre, to name but a few, Edinburgh certainly has plenty of theatrical treats on offer.

Then, after the curtain comes down on your chosen show, you could always head back to your hotel for a few drinks with the girls - but remember you'll need all your wits about you for the next day's activities. It's wise to be up bright and early on your first full day in the Scottish capital, as otherwise you'll miss out on all the wonderful sights and activities on offer in this beautiful city.

As you make your way down Princes Street, popping in and out of the cornucopia of shops on this world-famous thoroughfare, the castle perched on the rocks above you may look almost surreal, but it is very real - as you'll find out should you choose to spend an hour or two admiring the artifacts and soaking up centuries of historic happenings within this iconic building.

To work up an appetite that's worthy of the superb Saturday night dining experiences offered by restaurants in Edinburgh, it's a good idea to book an activity for the Saturday afternoon. Within 20 minutes of the city centre, there are paintball, quad biking and off-road driving centres where the girls can let off steam before settling down to the serious business of a night out on the town in Scotland's capital...

On the Sunday, hen-weekenders will no doubt enjoy a leisurely start to the day, before taking in a few more of the city's sights - including the ever-so-cute Greyfriar's Bobby - or head for one of the shopping centres for which Edinburgh is famed, such as The Gyle, Cameron Toll or St James.

There they'll find a host of well known names guaranteed to appeal to the most avid of shopaholics and to keep the girls browsing happily until lunchtime.

Sunday lunch in Leith, followed by a stroll round Ocean Terminal, is a perfect way to wind down the weekend's hen partying before everyone sets off back home, clasping a brace of shopping bags and a host of happy memories of great times spent in great company in Scotland's ultra-cool capital.

Perhaps the only downside of extended weekend hen celebrations is that for the poor put-upon hen party planner, considerably more organisation is involved than for a simple night out on the town.

For example, if you want to take in a play or a musical, or if you're keen to sample the fine cuisine in one of the city's top eateries, then booking in advance will be essential. Bearing this in mind, as soon as all the girls in your party have agreed on a suitable date, be sure to start finding out what's on in Edinburgh that weekend without delay and get booking!

Forward planning is the key to memorable hen weekends in Edinburgh.
