An online business is similar to any other business in that you need to anticipate what your expenses will be and what steps you will logically move along. There are many types of online businesses, but I will try to give general suggestions for a common online business. This way you can modify it to fit your own needs better.
Set-up
First of all you will have some set up costs. You must choose the product(s) that you will be promoting. Theoretically you can start promoting a product without spending a dime, but I think it is important to either buy the product or join the program if you are serious about promoting.
The second set-up item is an auto-responder. This is essential to any online business. Your online business will fail or succeed according to how you build your list, and the only real way to build a large list is by using an auto-responder - a program that automatically responds to and continues to follow-up with people who sign up to your advertising. The two main companies that offer this service are AWeber and GetResponse. This will cost about $20/month. There are some programs that say they will build your list for you, but if you leave the program, or they close down, you are left with almost nothing.
It is also wise to establish some presence online with a blog or some other web page that people can go to. Again some companies will say that they will give you a web page, but since you have no control over content or appearance, this will never really work for your business. To set up your own blog, you can use a free service like Blogger, which may be good for starters, but eventually you will want to move up to your own. For this, you will need to get a web site from GoDaddy, get a domain name and use the free WordPress software to set up your blog. This would only cost you about $5/month.
Leads
Your next step in planning your online business is to find a way to get leads. You need people to sign up to be on your mailing list. Your blog should have a place for people to sign up in exchange for some free information or some other free gift that you can offer them. You can also use programs like list builders or training programs like, My Lead System Pro to build your leads list.
You will need to send out emails or use Twitter or Facebook or Google pay-per-click to get people to sign up to your list. This can be any where from almost free (social media) to as much as $5/ lead on Google PPC.
Sales
Once you have your list built to a thousand or so members, you should be marketing to that list. You don't want to sell to them (like cramming your product down their throat), but rather help them solve their problems (this technique is a topic for another article). You can offer low-priced items all the way up to high-priced items. Build a relationship with your list so that they trust your judgment and believe that your offers will be good for them.
Those are some of the basic steps involved in setting up an online business. You will find that if you plan you online business in some way like this, you will have greater chance for success.
