Would you spend hundreds of pounds/dollars on a Digital Single Lens Reflex camera if you were only going to use it for holiday snaps, an occasional function and perhaps a night at the local public house?
It is very doubtful, not because the pictures that you would be taking at these venues would be of no value to you, but the capabilities of a digital single lens reflex camera would possibly far outweigh the practicalities of using it for such general photography. To justify a digital camera of this quality would certainly involve finding worthwhile and impressive content...
This does not mean that the digital camera cannot be used in the above mentioned venues, it can and would certainly produce some outstanding photographs, but for your everyday close-ups and general shots a digital compact would probably be a better tool to do the job, not only that, but it is certainly easier to carry in these situations which makes it easier and a more practical choice as well as companion.
Spending several hundred dollars on a camera would certainly warrant getting more than just a couple of uses out of it each year, and for its abilities a top notch digital camera would not be the practical choice if this were the case.
Moving forward from there, assuming you have now taken the next step and splashed out on one of these technologically advanced wonders of photography known as the Digital single lens reflex camera you will be eager to put its capabilities to good use.
After a short period of getting used to some of the settings and features of the camera by possibly experimenting by taking pictures in the garden or surrounding areas, a step up the picture content ladder will more than likely be on the cards and your pictures could start progressing from flowers and insects onto bigger and better things such as birds and other small wildlife.
Choosing and finding better venues, and subjects creates a knock on effect and before long the content bug would have really kicked in and you would start to continually evaluate the level of your investment against the output, options, quality, and above all else the content or subject of the shots. In other words, to take better pictures requires additional accessories or in some cases even better more elaborate equipment for better quality and different perspective shots, so while all the other annual photographic events such as the holiday etc are of course important the realisation for better content is soon triggered when dealing with a far more impressive piece of kit than a compact camera.
Each person has different interests and this can certainly be reflected by using a digital camera. Bringing those interests to life becomes a wonderful journey and great joy
Better and better photographic content can be a growing addiction that can lead anywhere for someone that is holding a digital camera in their hands. Taking steps towards producing great photography is easy, but producing and seeking out great content takes marginally more effort and energy.
After all what would be better? To take a walk through a park or field and spot a great hawk chasing and catching its prey. Then trying to tell and explain to friends and family what a great site this was and you wish they had been there to see it with their own eyes, or to have a DSLR camera to hand and capture the images digitally so you can show them exactly what you did see either by printing off some images or even emailing them to them as attachments if they live on the other side of the world.
