Let's face it. The more things change, the more things stay the same. When a lot of us were kids, the only way we could see the television shows and movies we wanted, we had to be in front of the TV when they were on. When the video cassette recorder came out, this enabled us to program in a time and a channel and record our favorite shows automatically, and the only concern we had then was whether we'd programmed it correctly, or that we had enough blank tape. But with the advent of the digital video recorder, or DVR, the days of the VCR have pretty much come to an end.
With a DVR programming and managing your recorded shows is super easy. There aren't any tapes to sort through or worry about labeling. You don't have to wonder if the tape is still good. And there are no hassles about making sure you covered all the bases in programming the VCR. DVRs have definitely revolutionized the way we record TV. However, which one will best suit our needs? This will all depend on what you expect and need out of your equipment. There are DVRs that cover every combination available.
Regardless of whether you want to automatically record a show every day so you can time-shift the show to a time when you can watch it, or if you want to record and keep an entire season of shows, virtually any DVR available will do that. Also, with most digital video recorders, you can pause, slow motion, and rewind live TV. There are even DVRs for HD that will handle virtually any function you can think of. But there are several functions that the newer recorders will do that may be a perfect fit.
There are DVRs available now that will handle hundreds of hours of storage, allowing you to not only record and store entire seasons of shows, but that will have the additional space available to store dozens of movies and specials. Some recorders allow for external storage of recordings so there are no limitations to the size of storage drive on the actual machine. You can now build a library of TV shows and favorite movies without ever having to worry about removing old shows.
Some digital recorders will allow you to export the movies and shows you have recorded to portable devices so you can watch away from your TV. That enables you to record a show at night, transfer it to your portable viewer, and watch it on the bus or train the next day, when you've got time and can sit down and enjoy the show without having to be in front of your TV to watch it.
VCR's freed us from the limitations and whims of TV programmers who invariably put shows on when we couldn't watch. DVRs remove almost every other limitation that VCR's stuck us with. While finding the DVR that does everything you want it to can be overwhelming, just remember, you do have choices. Get your list of wants together and go find your perfect DVR. Enjoy TV how you want, when you want. Now is the opportunity to get what you want!
