Being a talented photographer involves so much more than being able to just point a camera at something and hit a button. If you want to take exceptional pictures, you have to be willing to put your camera on manual and remember a few tips. Many different situations call for more advanced knowledge of what lenses to use, what light settlings to try, and sometimes even how to care for a camera in harsh climates or sandy beaches.
Learning how to frame a photograph and position your subjects are basics all photographers should learn. You must know what makes a distinct composition and how to position yourself so as to weed out distractions in the photograph, for instance. Good composition calls for an artistic eye.
A more technical knowledge is required to make sure the lighting for a photograph is adequate. To the layman, using a flash sounds like a no-brainer in dim light, but a flash often creates glare and ugly shadows, washing out the whole picture. It can be hard, however, to judge whether you have enough natural light. The direction of a light source is important as well. For example, bright noon sun may seem like the best time to take a picture -- plenty of light! However, the shadows and squinting are often ruinous. Glowing afternoon sunbeams, on the other hand, provide magical lighting opportunities.
Holidays are popular occasions for picture taking, but they are often accompanied by tough lighting situations. Halloween involves glowing jack o lanterns and costumed children going door to door at night. The Fourth of July features nighttime fireworks displays. Christmas offers amazing holiday displays, Christmas tree lights, and candles. Working in these situations takes a little knowledge, but the results can be lovely.
There are some really helpful photography articles online which offer innumerable pointers on a variety of subjects. Learn how to photograph particular subjects from kids and animals to majestic landscapes. Get tips on vacation photography and action photography, as well as all of the aforementioned challenging lighting situations. Whatever your photography question, you can probably find an answer among these articles.
