Personalised Wine - What Type of Wine Can You Have?

Expert Author Mark Goldrich

Wine is now an international commodity, with millions of bottles moving around the globe every year. Hundreds of grape types are grown all round the world, some obscure and some international. Many are blended in different ways; some wines can contain 13 different varietals in the blend.

Each country and region will have its own preferences, usually the local wine! In the US Californian wines are prevalent. In France they would never dream of drinking anything foreign.

Here in the UK we are renowned for the breadth of wine available to us in the shops. Being a very small wine producer England has always been a major worldwide importer. In fact England can be considered the inventor of the international wine trade. If you want a particular type of wine, then you can probably find it. Obviously the more unusual wines will be harder to find and some might not be commercially viable in the UK. Georgian and Moravian wines are hard to find but most ordinary tastes will be catered for.

Some people worry that personalised wine might not be good quality. They think that as it hasn't got a proper label, it might be vinegar! Well there is always the slight risk of a dodgy supplier in all industries, but they wouldn't stay in business long! Just check that your supplier knows about wine and gives you a description of the wine.

Does the type of wine matter? The important thing is to have a choice so that you can have something that suits both the occasion and your own personal preferences. Some people like big, hearty red, and others a light crisp white. All reputable suppliers will offer a range of wines including different colours, styles and prices.

Naturally personalised wine follows the local wine trends to a major extent. Shiraz is big in Australia; Sauvignon Blanc is huge in New Zealand. In Italy it's whatever the local winery produces.

What about the UK? Well, as befits the centre of the wine world, you can find most things. Of course it isn't difficult to find Chilean merlot, Australian chardonnay or Italian pinot grigio, they will be widely available. What if you fancy something a bit more interesting? Perhaps a Chianti Classico Riserva, a Cote du Rhone, or a Fleurie? Well they are all out there waiting for you. And if you are looking for something even more impressive, you'll even be able to find Chateau bottled Bordeaux Claret and Chateauneuf de Pape.

Looking for something a little stronger perhaps? Sherry and Port will fit the bill, and yes they are wines too, white and red respectively, that have been fortified with spirits.

If your tastes run to fizz there is still plenty of choice, a simple sparkler, a Spanish cava or even the finest premier cru French champagne. Even some alcohol-free sparklers are available with personalised labels.

If the wine you want is only available from another country, you're out of luck. Shipping even a single alcohol across borders is often complicated and sometimes illegal. Unless you know your countries rules, just buy from within your national market.

So whatever your favourite wine tipple is, you'll be able to have it fully personalised. So why wait, next time you need a bottle as a gift or for a special occasion, make it stand out with a lovely personalised label.
