Paying Large Bills For Air Conditioning? Call the Professionals

Expert Author Michael C Miller

A properly serviced air conditioning unit consumes about 15 % to 45 % less electricity than a neglected one. Are you in search of some professional assistance to achieve some savings?

Any adjustments and repairs in the air conditioners should be managed by the trained professionals. An air conditioning unit is a complex gadget than it looks to be. There are compressors, coils, fans, brazing joints, refrigerant gases, thermostats, filets, overload switches, electrical starters, insulation, lubricating oil, control systems, mountings and several other parts that only AC expert can understand.

Apart from this, there are specific tools which are fabricated specially for doing the air conditioning jobs, like tube bender, flaring tool, gas charging manifold, fin comb, vacuum pump, ratchet socket wrench, coil cleaning chemical, brazing torch, voltmeter, solder, clamp meter and many more.

When servicing of air conditioning unit is done, an expert technician must clean the condenser and evaporator coils, adjust and lubricate all the moving parts and check the pressure of refrigerants. If insufficient refrigerant gas is there, then it needs to be topped up.

If you possess a packaged unit, then technician will inspect the duct damper and if required, may replace or repair it. The air conditioning units which share the duct work with the furnace should have a damper inside the duct. It is done to prevent the cool air from entering the furnace cabinet during summer months and similarly hot air from reaching the air conditioning unit in winters.

Calling the professionals to service your air conditioner depends upon the duration for which you operate your unit. As a thumb rule you may need to call them approximately at following intervals:

In hot areas (when unit operates more than 6 months a year) - once every year.
In warmer regions (when unit operates 4 to 5 months a year) - every 2 to 3 years.
In cold regions (when unit operates for less than 4 months a year) - every 4 to 5 years.

Usually maintaining an air conditioner is not just enough, as you may have to replace your air conditioner with a new unit. The replacement of air conditioner will make sense if:

• Air conditioner is working since last 10 years.
• The efficiency of air conditioner (EER or SEER) is below 7 or 8.
• Repairing the existing unit would cost around half as much the cost of new unit.
• The unit becomes un-repairable.
• The AC unit is unable to cool properly.
