For people who periodically experience panic attacks throughout their lives, nothing would be better than to find a way to stop, or at the very least, gain control of their affliction.
After all, who would want to go through life constantly paranoid that their next episode is just around the corner? A panic spell occurs when the body goes into flight or flee mode. All of these physical symptoms begin from somewhere; and it all begins in the mind. During an attack, the blood flow is drawn away from the brain, and the blood goes to the major muscles, to get it ready for action. At the same time, there is a great demand for oxygen, and our bodies compensate by trying to draw air in short gasps. The heart races very rapidly, and palpitations may sometimes occur.
Mentally, a person undergoing an attack will experience great feelings of fear and anxiety. The first thing that one needs to do is to try to understand the problem. While undergoing an episode, you may feel like you have lost total control over your body. In which case, you should try to regain control of your mental faculties. If you've experienced a panic attack before, assure yourself that you would be able to make it through another spell. With that done, the next step is to gain control of your breathing.
Take deep, long breaths, slowly. Try to fill your lungs with air, and empty them out completely. Once that's under control, survey the situation that you are in, or whatever induced the attack, and take action in the most efficient way possible. Focus your thoughts on a single point, and for the meantime, relieve pressure on your brain by keeping all other distractions out of your head. At the precedent of panic attacks, when that dreadful wave of panic starts to build up, try to keep your mind on what's causing the turmoil in the first place. Listen to your favorite music, particularly those that soothe and relax you. It also helps to play video games, or watch videos.
The point is to engage in an activity that alleviates your stress. Begin taking deep, even breaths. And drink a glass of water just to help calm you down. If one of your close friends or family is around, start conversing with him/her until your nerves have settled down. Do not try to resist, as doing so will only let your mind think about what's causing the anxiety, and the whole thing will backfire on you. The less you worry about having panic attacks, the more you decrease the chances of you undergoing one. In this modern era, there are many things that we encounter in our everyday lives that ultimately build up to become that wave of panic that suddenly surges. In a way, these attacks are a wake up calls for those who feel that they have been leading stressful and unhealthy lives.
Life is way too short to spend on worrying about every little thing.
