Any woman who has ever opened her suitcase only to discover that her favorite blouse is now covered in shampoo needs to know that there really are ways to avoid this type of disaster. When it comes to packing your beauty products, a little extra preparation can go a long way - and can also save you a lot of wasted money on leaked and broken makeup and hair care items. Here are some easy tips that can save you a lot of frustration.
Burp all of your plastic bottles - If you have plastic bottles (such as shampoo and conditioner) you need to get rid of excess air inside the bottles to avoid leaks. All you have to do is open the bottle, squeeze out the extra air, and close the bottle back up. This way when the pressure changes, the bottle won't have problems.
Use You Shoes- If you are packing sock and shoes, this is a great way to stow smaller beauty products. For example, try wrapping a perfume bottle in a sock and storing it in a shoe; this not only protects your bottle, but also gives you a little extra room in your suitcase. For some extra protection, place any breakable bottles into plastic bags before you pack them - just in case!
Break Out the Plastic Wrap - If after burping your bottles you are still not convinced that they won't leak, try using a lining of plastic wrap under the cap. This will give you an added layer of security from unwanted leaks.
Stow Liquids Near the Bottom - For your checked baggage, the bottom of your bag is most protected. This means that the majority of your beauty products can be stored most safely there. Plus, when you store these items at the bottom of your bag, they'll benefit from the extra padding of your clothing and other items. But be careful: cover all liquid items with a plastic bag. The last thing you want is for your hairspray to leak all over the only clothing you have with you!
Use the 3-1-1 Rule - According to the Transportation Security Administration, you are allowed to carry on one one-quart clear plastic bag filled with liquids and gels in containers of no more than three ounces. Anything more than three ounces will need to be packed in your checked baggage. For detailed information about the 3-1-1 rule, go to the 3-1-1 page on the TSA website.
