The PSP Go is the newest version of the PlayStation Portable or PSP designed and manufactured by digital-giant Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. and was officially unveiled at the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo or E3 2009.
The device was released on October 1, 2009 in America and Europe simultaneously. A Japan release then followed on November 1 the same year. At first glance, the first noticeable difference between the PSP Go and the earlier versions is the design concept. Gone is the bar-like design of the previous versions and in comes the slide design reminiscent of new sliding cellular phone models (i.e. the Nokia 6600 slide). Sony however does not intend to replace the other versions with the PSP Go since they will still continue to manufacture the 3000 model but rather, to improve more on the PSP's mass appeal and portability.
The most significant change that the PSP Go has undergone is the omission of the Universal Media Disk drive or the UMD drive. The UMD drive is now replaced with a 16 gig internal flash memory where users can save games, images, music, videos and other digital content. Memory is also expandable through the use of the M2 memory stick, which is a staple on many Sony digital devices. Another major change for the PSP Go is the replacement of removable batteries to fixed rechargeable batteries. In terms of connectivity, the PSP Go is now Bluetooth compatible. This gives the PSP Go the capability to connect to Bluetooth devices such as wireless headphones and mobile phones.
