Overweight men are everywhere. How come? Could it be that they drink too much? Maybe it's the lack of exercise. How about the fact that in general they love their red meat; maybe a little too much? And then there is the fast food. Who hasn't seen the myriad of fast food advertisements everywhere? During a football game over three quarters of the advertisements are food or booze related. Pizza Hut, KFC, Bud Lite, Miller Lite, Coors Light, yada yada yada.
Too remedy the situation is not as bad as most men figure. You don't have to give up that beer, but mix in a little common sense when you drink. It's not necessary to jog until you fall down, some regular exercise will make a world of difference. Eat less red meat, yes that's right less, not no. You need not exist on bean sprouts and lentils but a salad once in a while wouldn't hurt. Don't use fast food as a crutch for eating. Home cooked meals are much more delicious and can be as fast.
One fact that men may not be aware of is that overweight or obese men are more likely to contract prostate cancer. It has been found that overweight men have lower values of PSA (Prostate Specific Antigens) in their blood. Apparently the amount of PSA in your body is a definable amount and if you are overweight or obese, the PSA gets spread out over more blood. So technically it isn't the amount, it's the volume that counts.
If that isn't enough to scare you into lifestyle changes, then try this. It has been found that men with a waist circumference over 42 inches are more than twice as likely to suffer from impotence than men with a 32 inch waist. It was also found that a little bit of physical activity per day, perhaps a half on hour a day will dramatically make a difference in erectile dysfunction. Not only are they more likely to be impotent but when they are not, the sperm they produce is neither plentiful nor productive. There is a 60% higher chance of lower volume and a 40% higher chance of having sperm abnormalities.
Another malady that happens to men but not necessarily women is hip and knee replacements. It was found that women who were overweight were not nearly as likely to have hip and knee problems as men. It is quite a startling set of statistics for this gender consideration. The stats say that women over a body mass index (bmi) of 25 which is the definition of overweight were no more likely to have hip replacement surgery than with a bmi those under 25. With men it is in the 60 to 70% range meaning that overweight or obese men are more than 60% more likely to need hip replacement.
It has also been found that overweight or obese men purchase more prescription drugs than their normal-weight counterparts. Up to 3 to 4 times more than men with normal body mass index of 18 to 24.9.
Overweight men need to drink a little less, eat a little less and exercise a little more. Before starting a diet or exercise regime talk to your doctor to see if you are on the right track.
