Outsourcing is one of the stable buzzwords in internet marketing. Business owners say they understand what it means but the misconceptions about outsourcing can lead to problems. If you are thinking about adding an internet presence to your business or profession or starting an online business of your own, knowing more about outsourcing will save you time and money.
If you think about it, you have been outsourcing off line your entire life. You hire plumbers and painters and carpenters to resolve problems. You use a professional cleaners for your clothes. When your computer crashes you call you IT person in a panic. You know how to outsource. In fact you share the sources you have with your friends and family.
Outsourcing your online business is not much different. Not only do you hire other people to get the projects you need completed for your online business, you are also providing part time jobs for other people. No matter how much you know about your business, you will not know how to do everything whether it is online or offline. For instance, you need to hire an attorney to set up the legal status of your business. You may be able to design strategies and work out business plans but how good are you at designing graphics? It make sense to hire someone who does a better job for you and can probably complete the job in much less time?
In your business, you are the expert. No one expects you to be the expert in everything that it takes to run your business. You hire other experts to do those jobs for you. You are contracting out parts of your business. It can be a one time job or it can be an ongoing job but the person you are contracting is not an employee. She is a freelancer and you can pay her hourly or by the project. It is a contract between you and that person so you do not file taxes on their behalf because they are a complete independent entity.
Some of the more common jobs that people outsource on their online businesses are for graphics designers, writers and ghost writers, web designers, virtual assistants, and customer support. Let the experts do what they do best so you can do what you know best. In this post I write about more options you have.
In this economy outsourcing is even more popular because you can hire someone on a contractor basis and let them go when the project is complete. That works well especially when your own income is fluctuating. Another benefit is you do not have to pay for software. The person you hired to do your Ebook cover probably owns Dream Weaver and Camtasia and the professional version of Adobe Acrobat. That could cost over $1500 but you do not have to buy it because your outsources already own them.
You need to have a website if you plan on an online business. There are sites where you can download and use a template that are inexpensive. The only problem is the sites do not look professional and they are not likely to attract more clients. Here too, I recommend that you hire a webmaster to help you put your website on line and have it ready for the search engines. My advice is to outsource from day one if it will get you started more quickly.
Keep in mind that not everything has to be perfect and that you do not to have everything you want ready for business. As long as you have some of the basics, such as information about your product and services, a method for prospects to become part of your list, and a method for accepting payment and keeping in touch with an auto responder, you are ready to start your online business. The point is you need to do something even if it is wrong.
That is not to say you should be outsourcing everything in your business and all at once. That does not make sense either. And do not look for a source to tackle a job when that job could be automated. For instance, most shopping carts come with a system that automatically adds names to your mail list based on your opt in page. The important thing is to have a system in place so that you can start to make money.
My last piece of advice is to hire people that know more than you do. They will make you look brilliant.
