Often one of the most difficult tasks in owning or renting a home or apartment is learning to clear items out and stay organized. Closets and hidden drawers provide spots to store items that aren't really needed, so it's easy to go overboard on purchases - you know that there is always somewhere to stash it. I find that thrift stores, such as Goodwill or Salvation Army are especially easy to over purchase - I can usually find great items for a very cheap price! But when moving, the last thing anyone wants to do is have to organize and pack. The following are suggestions to help with organization and purging to prepare for your move.
Don't buy new! When you know you're going to be moving in a few weeks, a few months or even in a year, resist the urge to bring new items into your home. A trick I use is to ask myself this simple question whenever I'm close to making a purchase: Is it truly worth the purchase to have to move in a few weeks/months/years? A lot of the time I find the answer being "no." Not only did I save myself from hauling the item in and then out of my house, I saved clutter and saved my money. Double bonus!
Think ahead of time. Knowing that your move is scheduled in a few weeks, spend any extra time you have clearing out before you begin to pack. That closet that you throw everything into? It's going to have to be cleaned out when you move, like it or not. Getting a head start on it a few weeks, or even a month or two ahead of time will save you the stress and rush when it actually comes time to relocate. Stake out a half hour or more each night to dedicate to purging the long lost items in your stash. Bonus: you never know what you may find.
Get help. Rounding up some troops, whether your kids, friends or neighbors, can help you make a huge dent in your purging efforts. Not only will they encourage you to get rid of the goods you haven't used in a while, they can be your runners and helpers. Having others to help sort the items in piles: donations, giving to a relative or friend, etc. Finding help shouldn't be difficult, as long as you make it clear that pizza and beverages are your treat.
