On February 10, 2009 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (USCPSC) banned certain phthalate chemicals linked to hormonal problems, allergies, asthma and cancer. These are the chemicals used in the manufacture of the vinyl covers for the production of baby crib mattresses. They did not order a recall of the mass number of these mattresses already in homes. Nor did they ban the other chemicals, because they say years of testing must be done before these chemicals can be deemed unsafe. These chemicals are known allergens and are already linked to childhood illness and asthma in adults.
In order to protect children and adults organic mattresses contain none of the following ingredients, each of which has proven to cause harm to healthy children and adults: PBDE's, brominated or chlorinated fire retardants, antimony, polyacrylonitrile (PAN), Modacrylic, dimenthyl, boric acid, respirable chrystaline silica. All of these are used as fire retardants.
A natural fire retardant has proven safe and effective and been approved by the USCPSC. It is a mixture of organic cotton and eco wool along with a 100% natural latex talalay rubber core.
Certified Organic Cotton (COC) is used as the batting and grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers or genetically modified organisms.
Talalay latex is also used safely. It is anti-microbial, dust mite resistant and hypo-allergenic. It is a natural rubber, sustainable harvested from the rubber tree, not a plastic foam like polyurethane or furniture foam. In my opinion, a truly safe organic mattresses must be Greenguard Certified.
The Greenguard Environmental Institute (GEI) is an industry-independent, third-party, non-profit organization that tests for chemical and particle emissions for products used indoors. Over 225 manufacturers and more than 200,000 products are under the GEI certification program.
