Expert Author Daniel Sanderson

When you first take the plunge and decide to install Windows XP. Out of the box there are a number of things you should do to make your computer more secure. Here is what we will be discussing.

- Installing Updates
- Using Windows Firewall
- Getting an Antivirus

Installing Updates
This is one of the most important things you should first do after installing an operating system, it is also something you should do on a regular basis. You can either install updates manually by going to the Microsoft website or by using the built in update program in the control panel that will do it automatically.

Using Windows Firewall
There are a number of different firewall programs you can download for free or by paying, however Windows does have a built in firewall that you can instantly utilise. The firewall will ask you if you would like to enable or disable it whilst installing Windows. You can find the firewall by going to the control panel, once there you will be able to configure the settings to your individual needs.

Getting an Antivirus
The next thing you should consider is getting an antivirus, Windows XP does not come with an antivirus pre-installed, however there are massive number of free programs available for you to download. The best ones being AVG Free, Avast and Avira. All of these programs have real time scanners to keep you protected at all times and usually update on a daily basis and automatically.
