It may have been just an unthinkable notion not even a few years ago, but these days online sales is a multi-billion dollar industry. Exchanges are going on online almost every second of every day as buyers and sellers barter and trade through hundreds of thousands of online marketplaces. It is a real, honest-to-goodness revolution in the way that sales are done in the modern day.
Despite the 1990s dot com bust, online buying and selling has grown at a rapid and rapidly fluctuating rate every year. It seems that as soon as any site goes down, a dozen more pop up to take its place.
The online marketplace is really the buyer's paradise, as e-commerce sites all vie for the most consumers. Competition traditionally drives the price of similar goods and services down, while websites try to differentiate themselves by providing the best service.
Of course, there is the concern over the security and privacy of financial data such as credit card and bank account numbers. Can the web be trusted? Well, many people are afraid of just such a possibility. They say fraud and ID theft is a deterrent.

They say you don't have to be afraid of the potential for fraud and theft if you just learn how to keep yourself well-guarded. They say to monitor your purchases, and to shop like you would in the real world. That means only agreeing to share your financial data with vendors whom you trust. It also means relying on the encryption services used by sites such as PayPal.
You can rest easy when it comes to the actual purchase information as well. Credit card statements will show where you have done your shopping, but not what it is you have actually bought.
So, if that doesn't convince you, you don't have to do your shopping online. But the safeguards do exist, and the lure of online shopping is sure to win you over eventually.
