Online Marketing - Is Knowledge Power?

Expert Author Belinda Faulkner

A straw poll of business owners, internet marketers, online marketing consultants and business experts generated the same answer - business owners need to learn more.

The question?

What one thing would you teach business owners about online marketing their business?

The Context

Preparing for a talk to business owners, knowing what I thought I needed to cover, I started asking the question. The answers all came back to one essential aspect - knowledge. It is true knowledge is power.

Sometimes the context was to do with why business owners would allow a website designer to control their entire online marketing. Most wouldn't let the person who designed their logo, or stationery make their marketing decisions so why is it different online?

The general consensus from everyone was that business owners need to empower themselves with the knowledge to control their online marketing strategy and to sensibly hire outsourcers to do the work.

Blocks to Knowledge

Having stepped into internet marketing seeking answers to my own frustration about a business website I know how hard it can be to know where to start or who to trust.

There is so much information and so many rags to riches stories. There are also too many experts who seem to start at the end assuming too much technical knowledge. in other words they don't speak your language nor you theirs.

Overcoming Blocks

Break it down. Start thinking about what you need to know then worry about where you are going to find it. In some cases the first place to start is not even internet marketing knowledge it is knowledge about your own business - your market, what they search for, why visitors should come to your website and what you want them to do when they get there.

Know your desired outcome before you start searching for knowledge. Narrowing the field of learning makes answers easier to find.

Ask the Right Questions

When you start the learning process you can start to ask the right questions. To help kick off the process you may ask those around you successful and otherwise what they did or would do differently?

There are many steps you can take to improve your knowledge but in general there is a feeling that to succeed online you need to expand and improve your knowledge but that you can't do that by starting at the often large and overwhelming end of internet marketing. Break it down!

Be assured every business owner can learn enough to successfully manage the marketing of their business online.
