Online Forums - Build a Community Around Your Website

Expert Author Norm Pavelka

Using online forums to attract traffic and build a community around your website can be an effective tool to build your site's popularity. Ensure that the focus of the site holds members interest; don't focus on features which are too technical for the visitors you want to attract.

Forums are developed around many different themes; sports, fashion, religion computer games are just a few popular ones. Successful forums can also be developed around other narrower themes.

How To Attract People and Get Them to Participate.

There are two vital factors necessary for a forum to be successful. The focus can be broad and generate a very general discussion or focus on a narrow niche of limited appeal but which may generate a vigorous dialogue. Somewhere in between the two extremes will usually provide the most successful response. Since the purpose of the site is usually to promote one or several products, subject for discussion should not roam too far from the chosen niche.

Secondly the theme will need to generate a sufficiently vigorous exchange of ideas to keep members interested and ensure they log in regularly. Ask people what problems they have in the particular theme you have chosen. If you have a list, send out a survey to find out what they want to see and ask for suggestions of what topics they would like to discuss. Perhaps the focus may need to be changed to be more in line with what your target audience requires.

Get to Know your Members
You will need to establish a relationship with those who visit your site, make them feel welcome and stimulate their interest in what you have to offer. Visit other forums associated with your niche to get a feel for how they operate and to see how your ideas can be shaped to make your site more attractive. This is something which will take weeks and months to develop before you can expect to see results.

When your forum begins to function, take care to use your moderator's powers with restraint, but you should be active in your forum and encourage good practice by your own actions. Too much restriction will dampen the enthusiasm of your members and eventually turn them away.

As you build a community around your website, think about why people should want to join your community and use the answers to shape the design of your site. Above all your members need to enjoy the experience of belonging to the online forum you create. If they don't, or if you decide to build a community around a topic most consider dull, you'll struggle to succeed.
