On Page SEO - Meta Keywords

This amongst other things involved the website owner including "meta keywords" in their websites "header sections" so if their website was about Fresh Water Fishing, they would include meta keywords such as: "fishing, fresh, water, lakes, tips, guides" and so on. This was how Google "knew" which sites to list at the top of its results for given search strings (what people type in Google to search).

Meta Keywords still play a role in SEO, as do Meta Description and Page Title, but all this will be discussed in due course.As the internet exploded Google soon realized that relying on "meta keywords" was not effective and could easily be abused by what became known as "keyword stuffing".

Devious website owners could even get high rankings on Google by in effect lying about what there site was about. Google had to change the way it ranked websites. In the evolution of Google upto Caffeine, probably the most important way that sites were ranked was: "backlink popularity". A "backlink" is basically a link to your website from another website. Google started to "measure" or "log" the number of links that each website had from other websites. So if I linked my website to yours your website would win a point in the eyes of Google. If I linked twice you would get 2 points. If ten websites all linked to your website you would get 10 points and so on.
