Most obese people refuse to lose weight or watch their diet because they believe in living life to the fullest and can’t be bothered with technicalities like calories and regular walks. This is a good way to keep one from losing weight until one realizes it’s too late. What people don’t realize is that obesity stresses your body and brings on health problems that can seriously hamper the quality of life. Here are just a few of the problems that obese people may encounter:
Cardiovascular Disease
This encompasses all the diseases that affect the functioning of your heart and blood vessels. The excess weight on your body puts immense pressure on your heart and arteries. Fat deposits may line up along your arteries and prevent proper blood flow. Being overweight brings about complications like high blood pressure and high levels of cholesterol which increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Type 2 Diabetes
Your body produces a hormone called insulin to help control the level of sugar in your blood. Your body’s ability to produce sufficient amounts of insulin is directly linked to your weight. The more weight you carry, the harder it gets for your body to produce enough insulin. Sometimes, your body may not respond to insulin as it should, thus leading to unsafe levels of blood sugar. This is called type 2 diabetes.
Sleep Apnea
Excess weight can narrow your airways. This can cause you to stop breathing for brief moments while you sleep. Snoring, fatigue during the day, and headaches are just some of the symptoms of sleep apnea. Recent research has shown that people suffering from sleep apnea are at a higher risk for heart disease.
Cancer
Cancer is a harmful growth that may rapidly spread from the affected organ to other parts of the body if left untreated. Though the exact reasons are unknown, obesity increases your risk for certain cancers, especially those that affect the esophagus, breast, kidneys, colon, rectum, and prostate.
Eating healthy and regular exercise are time-tested answers to preventing major diseases. To live or not to live with obesity is a question the person should himself answer. Lose as little as 5% of your body weight and you can reduce the risk of developing most of these life threatening complications. Fight again obesity is a challenge, if you win you will be rewarded with a healthy body which is a major step in living a more fulfilling and complete life.
