Nutrition For Athletes - What to Include in Your Diet

Expert Author C. J. Harrison

Athletes put a high demand a lot on their bodies. They push themselves to the limits and require a nutrient high diet. But with so many plans, advice, and other sources telling you what to put in your body, it can be a problem to find what should be added to your diet, or better yet taken out.

The first step to a diet of an athlete is restriction. This doesn't mean starve yourself but restrict the 'bad' foods from your diet and add foods high in carbohydrates, this is very important; typically an athlete will need to boost their carbohydrate intake by about 15-20%. Athletes also need to remove the empty calories from their diet. This is one of the most important parts of their training, empty calorie meals tend to be the worst you can do for your body. Not only are you not getting what you need in your body, but you are filling yourself up with them and not making any room for what is actually needed.

Hydration is something overlooked when you're outside of direct training. Hydration should be taken care of 24/7. Typically you will find that normal sports drinks will be more than enough hydration for you body around the clock. This should be the second most important part of your diet, because lack of hydration, even a little bit can cause serious injuries.

When eating keep in mind to look for lean-protein and low-fat foods. Eggs, cereal, low-fat peanut butter are all great additions to your diet. You should also remember each person is different. What works for one person may or may not work well for the next person. Supplements shouldn't be taken unless you are afraid you are not gaining all your vitamins from your diet. Overall if you use common sense and eat right you will have a good diet that will benefit you greatly in your sport.
