Notable Factors Increasing Your Risk of Breast Cancer

Expert Author Johnny Fu

It has been estimated that 1 in every 8 women gets breast cancer at one stage in her life. This statistic is scary, but the good news is that this disease can be cured, when detected in its early stages of development. You should definitely know what the breast cancer risk factors are.

Most of them, such as genetics, are well known, but others are not so widely discussed. It should be noted that even if you are in higher risk, this does not necessarily mean that you will get the disease. Approximately three quarters of all women who have the condition have not been considered at risk. Still, you are highly recommended to have more regular screenings, if any of these factors is applicable to you.

Late or early child birth increases your chance of getting breast cancer slightly. There are indications that women who have a child before they reach the age of 18 or have their first baby after 35 are more likely to get the condition. This is applicable to those who have never had children as well.

Early menstruation and/or late menopause put you in higher risk as well. If you have had your first period before you turned 12, you are slightly more likely to have the condition. This is applicable to women whose menopause began after the age of 55.

Being overweight increases your chances of getting this serious medical condition. This is particularly applicable to women in menopause that are on a high calorie diet and have greater fat deposits, especially around the waist.

Surprisingly or not, it has been estimated that increased alcohol consumption leads to a greater risk of breast cancer. Women who have between 2 to 5 alcoholic drinks a day are one and a half times more likely to get the disease compared to those who do not consume alcohol at all.
